I think it’s fair to say that the 20th Anniversary SRI in the Rockies Conference was a smashing success! While turnout was lower than last year (for the first time ever!), those who joined us in Tucson October 25-28, 2009 were treated to a rich agenda and a fabulous venue, plus high quality, high energy interaction with friends and colleagues. The feedback we have heard thus far has been nothing but positive. Scary positive.
But the ‘geography’ question continues to confound some people. I probably answered this one a couple dozen times—at least once in front of a room of about 60 people. Even so, it deserves a little more attention.
Looking forward to next year, it’s fair to say that no one would expect to see the Rockies in Texas, unless it’s the Colorado Rockies playing the Texas Rangers. Yet the 2010 SRI in the Rockies Conference is scheduled to convene in San Antonio November 18-21, 2010, smack dab in the heart of the Lone Star State.
So, to the question about whether the Rocky Mountains extend to Arizona and Texas, the answer is all about perspective.
1. From space, pretty much everything between Denver and the Pacific Coast is the Rocky Mountain range.
Okay, you say; well, that might have covered you for Tucson, Arizona, but Texas is a different story…
2. If Saturday Night Live can broadcast live on Thursday night (as they did several times in the run-up to the 2009 Presidential Election), then why can’t SRI in the Rockies move around a bit?
If you were outraged that Saturday Night Live broke from its weekend timeslot, this might not work for you either; so here’s George Gay’s favorite explanation:
3. SRI in the Rockies is a “state of mind.”
How can you argue with that?
This premiere annual event for the sustainable and responsible investment industry brings people and organizations together to teach, learn, and collaborate. For those who gather at SRI in the Rockies, it’s not about where we are, but who we are with that matters most.
We feel that the essential common denominator among those who are attracted to SRI in the Rockies is a conviction that money can be used for good—that we can consciously direct the flow of investment capital in more healthy, life-affirming, transformative ways.
If this idea resonates with you, we look forward to seeing you next year in San Antonio!
