Venue Sustainability

The Sheraton New Orleans has been updating and upgrading their facility to incorporate more and more environmentally friendly and “green” initiatives. The following is an example of the measures have been completed or are ongoing.

Guest Room Initiatives

  • Motion censored HVAC controls
  • Energy Star rated shower heads
  • “Make a Green Choice” linen and terry program
  • New guest room drinking glasses cleaning program to reduce water consumption
  • Six Sigma reduce energy consumption project for kilowatt hours, water, sewer and gas
  • Phase in of MERV 13 filters with more improved filtration
  • Beginning applications using low VOC paint
  • Replace all guest room incandescent lights with high efficiency compact fluorescent bulbs

Public Spaces

  • Electrical dimmer boards for lighting controls in meeting rooms
  • Automated controls for cooling towers
  • HVAC controls and central chilled water on building management program utilizing variable frequency drives to control KWH usage
  • Cold cathode bulbs in chandeliers and public space lighting
  • Energy efficient bulbs in 24 hour lighting applications such as stairwells, guest room corridors, etc.
  • Recycling program for white paper, newspaper, magazine and telephone books with collection on all 49 floors
  • Beginning applications using low VOC paints

Internal Work Spaces

  • Energy Star rated chiller and heat cabinet in the commercial kitchen
  • Laundry equipment Energy Star rated with exhaust fans filtered to improve air quality and reduced KWH requirements
  • Various processes within multiple departments that have converted document storage to an electronic process
  • Power usage control for monitors and desktops that are left on
  • Associate discounted transportation/bus passes to encourage reduction in auto fuel consumption
  • Six Sigma Project to reduce energy consumption on culinary equipment
  • Phase in of MERV 13 filters with more improved filtration
  • Increased Energy Star rating on newly installed equipment and mechanicals

Green Meetings

  • Utilizing electronic sales products, to reduce paper usage in the meeting planning process and encourage the use of web and email based business conduct
  • Providing Meeting Impact Reports and Post Event Reports to meeting planners which illustrate water savings, energy savings, waste management and sustainable food and beverage consumption
  • Sustainable centerpieces and plant rentals
  • Using energy efficient digital signage
  • Using paper with 50% post-consumer recycled content
  • Providing 30% recycled paper content for flipcharts and whiteboards upon guest request
  • Linen-free meeting tables
  • Offering sustainable banquet and catering menu options on electronic menus
  • Implementing back of house composting of organic waste
  • Implementing food donation programs in partnership with philanthropic organizations

In 2007, the Sheraton New Orleans received a Top 20 Starwood Hotel North American Division award for Energy Management.
